But first, what is NSFAS?
For those of you who aren’t quite sure what NSFAS is, it’s a government funded financial scheme that assists the underprivileged, poor, and working-class students in South Africa. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) aims to uplift those students eager to further their studies and promote access to higher educational opportunities.
The NSFAS application for 2024 is open between 2 November 2023 to 31 January 2024. So, you better apply before the deadline, or your application will be rejected.

Check Your Eligibility
Before you actually begin your NSFAS application, you must check whether or not you meet the requirements.
Take a look at the list below:
- South African citizen
- Academically deserving
- Financially in need as determined by the NSFAS means test
- Applied to a public university or TVET college
- Passed grade 12
- Sassa grant recipient (does not need to undergo ‘means test’)
- Orphan or child with unemployed parents
- A learner from a no-fee school

Create an Account
You will need to create an account on the NSFAS website. You will be required to fill out your email address, cell phone number and create a username and password.

Start the Application Process
Click on the “MyNSFAS” tab and answer following the on-screen questions. The necessary information must be correctly filled out. [adning id=”134306″]

Submit Your Supporting Documents
You’re going to need to upload the required documentation that is applicable to you.
This step is important, so make sure that you have gathered all the necessary documents below:
- A copy of your ID or birth certificate.
- A copy of your parents, guardian or spouse’s ID.
- Proof of your income (if applicable).
- Proof of parent, guardian or spouse’s income (if applicable).
- If you’re a Sassa grant recipient, then you don’t need any proof of income.
- If you’re an applicant with a disability, then you’ll need a completed and signed ‘Disability Annexure A Form’ and ‘Human Support Claim Form’.
- If you’re an applicant who is recognised as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development, then you must submit a completed and signed ‘Vulnerable Child Declaration’ and Consent Form’.

Complete Your Application
It’s finally time to complete your application. Simply give that “SUBMIT” button a click and your NSFAS application for 2024 will be sent through.
